I was a freelance reporter for several years, before heading to the US for study.
Upon my return to New Zealand I worked for eight months as a fulltime photo-journalist in Pahiatua, covering all issues, notably local politics, industry, architecture and sport. I conducted interviews with ex-soldiers to mark the 50th anniversary of VJ Day.
I then spent a year at the Dannevirke Evening News, covering politics, court, police news, agriculture and education. I interviewed leading politicians such as incumbent Prime Minister Jim Bolger and NZ First leader Winston Peters. Rugby legend Zinzan Brooke and Olympic weightlifting icon Precious McKenzie were other highlights.
I left Dannevirke to work as sports reporter for the Chronicle in Levin, interviewing international rugby stars such as Tana Umaga, Christian Cullen, Mark 'Bull' Allen, Craig Dowd, Carlos Spencer and others. I was also required to contribute my work to the New Zealand Press Association and Rugby News.
I held the position for three-and-a-half years, before heading to Europe to teach.
